CCS has an improved antivirus service that will automate the update of the antivirus files, a task that sometimes required each user to update their antivirus files several times a month on their PC. This service provides a worry-free solution by copying these files in the background for you (you won't even notice it happening) via a server on the University's network.

All you need to do is install the Symantec AntiVirus (Managed Mode) software on your PC, be connected to the University's network and keep up-to-date with the new releases of the software.

Since September 2001, users at the University have had access to the Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition. The latest release of this product has a managed mode that allows the antivirus files to be updated from a central file server. These antivirus files are referred to as configuration and definition files. The service is available for Windows 98/2000/XP. To date, this service is not available for Macintosh or UNIX Symantec Antivirus clients.

  1. WARNING: You must first UNINSTALL any antivirus on your computer. Follow these instructions to do this:
    • From the Start button, go to Settings, Control Panel
    • Double-click on the Add/Remove Programs
    • Select the Antivirus programs and then click on the Change/Remove button
    • Click OK and reboot the computer

  2. Download the Symantec Antivirus (Managed Mode) software from /nortondld.html
  3. Protect the information on your PC today. Follow these steps to install Symantec Antivirus (Managed Mode) on your campus computer.
    • Double-click on the downloaded file (NAV90_EN.exe)
    • Click on OK when Setup is completed
    • Reboot your computer

  4. Update the software when CCS notifies you of a new release - you can expect this to occur about once a year.

At Home Computers

Please do not install the managed mode client on home computers. To obtain the correct antivirus client for home use, you have the following options:

  1. Purchase a CD from COSMOS (employee card required) for $6.00.
  2. Download the software from the download page: /downloade.html

Please Note: Software can only be downloaded when using the University's dial-up services or Edunet. The download time can vary betweeen 2 to 3 hours depending on your connection speed. Downloads are not permitted using all other Internet Service Providers (i.e. Cyberus, Rogers, Bell) due to software licensing restrictions.

CCS encourages users of the Unmanaged client to setup regular definition file updates on their computers. This will save users from having to do this manually on a regular basis. Please follow these instructions to do so:

  1. Click on Start | Programs | Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition | Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition
  2. From the File menu, select Schedule Updates….
  3. Make sure there is a check mark in the box beside Enable Scheduled Automatic Updates
  4. Click on Schedule
  5. Select Daily under the Frequency section
  6. Under the When section, select a time when your computer is most likely to be on during the day
  7. Click on OK twice
  8. Click on Exit to close the application.

Notebook Computers

CCS recommends that notebook users follow the instructions under At Home Computers (Unmanaged Mode client). This will enable users to be mobile and at the same time be protected from viruses.

In some cases, notebook users who spend most of their time on campus may choose to install the "Managed Mode" version of Symantec (instructions under On Campus Computers). This way, users are not required to configure their client for scheduled definition file updates.

If you have problems with the installation, contact us by sending an e-mail to the Computing Help Centre at cybersos@Uottawa.ca or by calling extension 6555.

Symantec Antivirus Rescue Disks

Windows 95/98

You can create NAV CE 7.6 Rescue Disks under Windows 95/98. The definitions used in the Rescue Disk set will match the definitions installed under Windows 95/98. You will need up to five blank floppy disks.

To create the Rescue disks:
1. Install the NAV CE 7.6 client under Windows 95/98.
2. Update the virus definitions on the computer. The latest definitions can be downloaded from the following Internet address:

http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/download.html

3. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition, and then click Rescue Disk.

NOTE: If the Rescue Disk shortcut does not appear in the Start menu, then open Windows Explorer, and then locate the \Program Files\Norton AntiVirus folder. Double-click the Nresq32.exe file to run the Rescue Disk creation program.

4. Follow the on-screen instructions.
5. Write protect each newly created Rescue Disk.
6. Turn off the computer for one minute (unplug if necessary to remove virus from memory).
7. Insert Rescue Disk 1, and then turn on the computer.
8. Start the Rescue Disk scan.

Windows 2000/XP

The Symantec Rescue program is designed to work only under Windows 95/98/Me. If you install a Symantec program that includes Rescue under Windows NT/2000/XP, the Rescue portion of the program will not be installed. Limitations and security implications presented by these operating systems do not allow Symantec Rescue to function in the same manner as it does in Windows 95/98//Me.

Alternatives to Rescue
There are several alternatives to Symantec Rescue for restoring system information. Symantec recommends the use of Windows 2000 Emergency Repair Disk utility. You will need four blank floppy disks. For detailed instructions on creating Windows 2000 Repair Disks, please refer to the following web page.

Macintosh users

Please note that this service is not available for Macintosh computers, however, you may still download the appropriate client and function as an “unmanaged” client. Please download your copy of the software from our download site: /downloade.html (for Mac OS9 and OS10)
